The Voluntary Market involves individuals, companies, and organizations who purchase carbon offsets voluntarily to mitigate or neutralize their own greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, electricity use, and other sources. These groups are not obligated to purchase carbon offsets, but choose to for various reasons such as green branding or social corporate responsibility, or simply “doing the right thing.”
Carbon offset products used in voluntary markets are generally referred to as Verified Emissions Reductions or (VERs)
The Primary drivers for businesses buying VERs are:

- Businesses want to participate in the fight against climate change and they want to do their part by being responsible and reducing their footprint.
- Green branding: Some businesses are using this as a marketing strategy to show the world that they are doing something to fight climate change
