The Voluntary Carbon Market exists alongside the many international compliance carbon markets where greenhouse gas emissions are regulated through legislated policy. This smaller voluntary market caters to individuals, companies and governments, who choose to purchase carbon offsets to mitigate their own greenhouse gas emissions - not because of any legal requirement to do so, but rather as a means of demonstrating climate leadership.

Since 2006, the volume of voluntary carbon offsets transacted internationally has risen from 32 million tonnes per year to over 100 million tonnes annually. These transactions involve hundreds of carbon projects, dozens of countries and thousands of buyers, representing every corner of the globe. In 2012, this market was worth just over $520 million, and it is expected to continue to grow beyond 2020 (Ecosystem Marketplace: State of the Voluntary Carbon Markets 2013).

Our Company has been a leader in both project development and commercialization services in the voluntary market since 2005. We have been involved in the development of more than 30 projects across the globe which include biomass fuel switching, landfill gas capture, efficient wood cookstoves, and some of the largest forest carbon sequestration projects in the world (including Improved Forest Management, Avoided Conversion, and REDD+). We have worked throughout Africa, South America, across Canada and in the United States, using the world’s leading voluntary carbon standards.
